The Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship
Inaugural Student Congress in Lexington, Kentucky

Your support will enable 50 college juniors from every U.S. State to attend a week of study at the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship,
July 19-26, 2008, in partnership with the University of Kentucky Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce and Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, Transylvania University and Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate

Henry Clay’s ideals of debate, diplomacy, communications and beneficial compromise will be at the center of the curriculum used in developing these new statesmen and women.

“As a nation, we’ve always been one of high ideals. One of those ideals is statesmanship,” said Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the
U.K. Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce and Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, “ In recent years, we’ve seen a concern that we’re focusing more on actions than words; that actions speak louder than words. But this wasn’t Henry Clay’s approach. He was about finding a middle ground; not the idea that there was a right way or a wrong way, but, in fact, a mutual way. We need to reinvigorate the part of statesmanship that includes active dialogue, to find the best way to advance public policy. The Student Congress will plant seeds of discussion and ideas and conversations that will be repeated across the country.”
